The Port Pirie Region is a coastal municipality located in the southern part of Australia, in the state of South Australia. The region has a rich history that dates back to the early 1800s and is marked by the coming of settlers, the establishment of towns and the growth of the mining and industrial sectors.

Early Settlement

Before the arrival of Europeans, the area was inhabited by Ngadjuri and Nukunu tribes, who have lived in the region for thousands of years. This changed with the arrival of British explorer Edward John Eyre in 1839, who named the region Port Pirie after the ship that brought him there.

Settlers arrived shortly after, and the town of Port Pirie was established in 1845. The town was named after the region and quickly became a major port town, responsible for the transportation of goods and people throughout the region.

Mining and Industry

The natural resources of the region played a significant role in its growth, particularly mining. The discovery of silver, lead, and zinc deposits in the nearby Broken Hill in 1883 led to the development of the mining industry in the region, with the opening of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP) in 1891.

The establishment of BHP made the region a key player in the national and international mining industry, with the town becoming a hub for the transportation of minerals. This led to the creation of new jobs and businesses, resulting in a population increase in the region.

Modern Times

The region continued to grow and develop, with the establishment of the Port Pirie Regional Council in 1997. The council oversees the governance of the region, which has undergone significant changes in recent years.

The town of Port Pirie is now home to a diverse range of industries, including mining, manufacturing, and tourism. The region is also known for its natural beauty, with several parks and reserves located throughout the area, including the Telowie Gorge Conservation Park and the Port Germein Gorge.
